The Ceramic Sea Urchin Bowl, designed and crafted by Andersen Studio, is based on the form of the natural shell, once ubiquitous on the Maine Shoreline. The proportions of the Andersen bowl are perfectly true to nature’s sublime design. The Andersen’s naturally flowing ceramic gray decorating colors are applied with individualistic artistic freedom by American artisans. The natural and spontaneous brushwork retains the elegant seashore quality of nature’s work, because it does not attempt to become an exact replica. The natural quality in spontaneity, shared by man and nature, brings the Andersen stoneware sea urchin bowl to life. The Andersen’s signature white matte glaze is designed to capture the natural fluidity of ceramic colors as they move across the form. The organic ceramic sea urchin bowl is ten inches in diameter.

After hand decorating in which designs are painted freehand in wax and under-glaze colors, the ceramics are hand dipped in the unique Andersen glazes and fired to a temperature of 2200 degrees.  They are then finished and graded before going to the collector.

The Stoneware Crouching Bear is hand brushed in Andersen’s Studio’s sandy brown ceramic decorating slip. The sculptural curves delineate the muscular strength of the bear’s form as it takes a step forward. The strength of the Bear’s form is complemented by a gentleness expressed through the face and posture. The bear is unthreatening, a fellow creature of our natural world. The Andersen Studio stoneware bear is handcrafted using the ceramic slip casting process. The hand finishing and natural properties of the Andersen’s original ceramic glazes and decorating colors produces individuality in every slip-cast form, making every ceramic form a genuine expression of American individuality.

The second generation of six, Elise, Mackenzie, Christine, Karen, Gerda and Iain, have contributed ceramic designs and development.  Andersen Design Ceramic Studio Production and the Andersen Studio Ceramic Art and Design Gallery all continue at the original location in East Boothbay, Maine, USA.
