In 1952, Weston and Brenda Andersen began collaborating on contemporary designs of ceramic bowls, vases and other functional ware in Akron , Ohio. A year later thay brought their innovative partnership to a rambling old barn on the island of Southport, Maine. There they started their line of animal and bird sculptures. Local residents and rusticators alike were attracted to the elegantly simple pottery and started collections which have continued through the generations.

Weston created original glazes in soft greys, sandy browns, and white during this period, later adding the metalic bronze, ebony and verdigris. The sculpture and functional ware soon became known for origional interpretation, unique in style, color, form and subject matter

Brenda created many decorative patterns as well as one of a kind drawing on ceramics using her talent for spontaneous free hand brushwork. Most of these works of art were sold without being documented . Today we are attempting to collect information of Brenda's early work. She had several themes that she repeated, including fantasy fish, Adam and Eve, The Owl nad The Pussy Cat, See No Evil, Speak No Evil, Think No Evil, Kings and Queens , often with forest animals, and of course portraits of family and acquantances

The enterprise is being carried on today by a second generation of Andersens, who also create original one of a kind work on th ecavas of forms developed over the years. Elise Andersen and Susan Mackenzie Andersen are primarily responsible for keeping the tradition of Andersen Studio alive, with contributions from Christin Andersen Tupper, Karen Andersen Woodard, Gerda Andersen Dupree, and Iain Peter Andersen.

We are currently working toward developing a way that the Andersen tradition of personal creativity and hand-crafted products can continue into the future through the involvement of a larger community beyond the family . Learm more HERE

The original handmade sculptures are reproduced in plaster molds by skilled New England artisans. Using the slip-casting method, we cast and fetle the greenware forms before they are fired to just hard enough for decorating and glazing.

The designs are painted freehand in wax and underglaze colors, hand-dipped in the unique Andersen glazes and fired to a temperature of 2200 degrees. They are then finished and graded before going to a customer.
